DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs launch AI bioresilience program to counter biological threats

Google DeepMind, working with sister company Isomorphic Labs, announced a bioresilience program on July 16, 2026 aimed at using frontier AI defensively against biological threats, including the possibility that AI itself could be misused to help design dangerous pathogens. The program repurposes existing DeepMind technology for this new purpose: AlphaFold style protein structure prediction and the AlphaEvolve agent are being adapted to speed outbreak detection and accelerate the design of vaccines and therapeutics, while SynthID, DeepMind's watermarking system originally built to label AI generated media, is being explored as a tool DNA synthesis companies could use to screen incoming orders for potentially dangerous AI generated sequences. DeepMind said the effort grew out of more than a year of work and over 15 partnerships with government bodies, biosecurity organizations and research groups, split between preventing misuse and strengthening how quickly the world can respond to a real outbreak. The announcement is part of a broader pattern of frontier labs treating biosecurity as a distinct safety priority alongside cyber and alignment risk, following growing evidence that increasingly capable models can meaningfully uplift a non expert's ability to understand pathogen biology. Unlike a specific product launch, the initiative is structured as an ongoing program rather than a single release, with DeepMind describing it as still early and dependent on continued government and industry cooperation.
