Nvidia rallies nearly 40 companies into new Open Secure AI Alliance after OpenAI hack fallout

On July 27, 2026, Nvidia announced the formation of the Open Secure AI Alliance, a coalition of nearly 40 companies including Microsoft, SpaceX, Palantir, CrowdStrike, Cisco, Dell, HPE, Salesforce, SAP and Adobe, dedicated to jointly developing and sharing open source tools for AI driven cyber defense. The alliance follows directly from the fallout of Hugging Face's security breach, where the target company reportedly could not use leading closed US frontier models to defend itself and instead turned to a self hosted, open weight Chinese model unbound by the same safety guardrails. “The Open Secure AI Alliance will work to remediate and disclose vulnerabilities using open technologies,” Nvidia said in its announcement, adding that “the recent Hugging Face security incident delivered a clear reminder: cyber defenders need open, frontier agentic systems for self defense.” The launch lands as US lawmakers, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, weigh restrictions on Chinese AI models over so called ‘distillation’ attacks, intensifying a fight over whether open weight systems are a security risk or a security necessity. Council on Foreign Relations fellow Chris McGuire told CNBC the coming debate “is not a debate about open source vs closed source, it is a debate about whether or not to tolerate Chinese IP theft.” Notably, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and Amazon are all absent from the alliance's founding member list.
