Runway launches an AI model router as generative media gets crowded

10:07 AM · July 23, 2026

Runway launched Media Router through Runway Dev, its developer platform, according to TechCrunch, a tool that automatically selects the best available image, video, or audio generation model for a given request depending on whether a developer is prioritizing quality, speed, or cost. Model routers that automatically pick the best underlying model for a given task have become increasingly common in text based large language model tools over the past year, but Runway says this is the first router built specifically for generative media, a category spanning image, video, and audio generation that has expanded rapidly enough that manually evaluating every new model release has become impractical for most development teams. The router draws on a growing roster of third party image, video, and audio models available through Runway Dev alongside Runway's own models, meaning developers get a single integration point rather than needing to individually integrate and continuously re-evaluate each new generative media model as it becomes available. Customers already building on Runway Dev include Adobe, Cloudflare, ElevenLabs, Expedia, Shutterstock, and Quora, giving the new router an existing base of enterprise customers likely to adopt it quickly given they are already integrated with the underlying platform. The launch reflects how thoroughly the generative media landscape has grown beyond a handful of well known model providers, to the point that infrastructure specifically for navigating that crowded field is now a viable product category on its own.
