Nvidia is sending GPUs to the moon

Nvidia is deploying its Jetson computing platform, designed to be compact and power efficient enough for robotic systems that must process sensor data locally, across multiple upcoming Lunar Outpost missions, according to TechCrunch, beginning with a mission called Lunar Voyage 2 planned to explore a lunar region known as Reiner Gamma later this year. For that mission, Lunar Outpost will use Nvidia Jetson modules to command and control the rover's LiDAR sensing system and to handle post processing and compression of large sensor data files before they are transmitted back to Earth, work that benefits significantly from being done on site rather than requiring every piece of raw sensor data to make the multi second round trip communication delay to and from the moon before any processing can begin. Lunar Outpost has several additional smaller autonomous rovers scheduled for launch to the moon in the next few years, along with a larger vehicle called Pegasus intended to eventually carry astronauts, with each mission expected to launch aboard a Falcon 9 rocket before the end of the year. The deployment is part of a broader push by Nvidia into what it calls space computing, extending its edge AI hardware business beyond terrestrial robotics and into an emerging market for autonomous, locally computed systems operating in space, where the usual assumption of low latency connectivity back to a data center simply does not hold.
