Google's Gemini nears a billion user milestone
7:52 AM · July 23, 2026
Google said during its second quarter earnings call that Gemini has surpassed 950 million monthly users, according to TechCrunch, tripling from where the assistant stood a year earlier and adding more than 200 million users in roughly five months since crossing 750 million in February. The growth puts Gemini on track to join Google's exclusive list of billion user products, a group that already includes Search, Gmail, Drive, Android, YouTube, and Chrome, and would make Gemini the fastest growing addition to that list in the company's history if it crosses the billion user threshold at its current pace. The milestone lands as OpenAI's ChatGPT, which crossed 1 billion monthly active users itself in June, has seen its own share of the overall AI assistant market fall below 50 percent for the first time, with Gemini's market share climbing to roughly 27.7 percent over the same period, according to market share data cited in the report. The shifting numbers suggest the AI assistant market, which for much of the past two years has been discussed largely as a two horse race dominated by ChatGPT with everyone else a distant follower, is now genuinely competitive at the scale of hundreds of millions of users, a meaningful change in the competitive picture given how dominant ChatGPT's early lead once appeared.
