Don't expect Chinese AI models to displace their US rivals anytime soon, Deutsche Bank says

Deutsche Bank's Jacky Tang told CNBC he remains constructive on China's AI sector as a whole, even as he pushed back on the idea that any single Chinese model is likely to displace established US rivals like OpenAI or Anthropic anytime soon. Tang argues that while domestic Chinese AI models are advancing rapidly on technical benchmarks, as Kimi K3's strong showing against Fable 5 and GPT 5.6 Sol illustrates, geopolitical tensions and security concerns among governments and large enterprises are likely to limit how far these models can realistically expand into Western markets regardless of how their raw capabilities compare. His broader recommendation is that investors interested in the theme should look across the entire AI value chain in China, since leadership within the sector is rotating quickly between different companies and layers of the stack, rather than concentrating a bet on any one model or company maintaining its current lead. The comments offer a more measured counterpoint to some of the market's sharper reactions to Kimi K3's release, suggesting that near term benchmark performance, however impressive, does not automatically translate into the kind of enterprise and government adoption in Western markets that would be needed for a Chinese model to genuinely displace incumbent US providers.
