AMD launches Helios, its first rack scale AI system to rival Nvidia, adding Microsoft as a buyer

AMD launched Helios, its first rack scale AI system, according to CNBC, combining the company's new Instinct MI455X GPUs, sixth generation EPYC Venice processors, its Pensando networking technology, and its ROCm software stack into a single integrated system meant to compete directly with Nvidia's rack scale offerings. Microsoft has signed on as a new Helios customer, joining Meta, OpenAI, and Oracle, which had already committed to deploying the system, and Microsoft plans to run Helios on its Azure cloud platform. The system is scheduled to begin shipping later this year, and represents AMD's most competitive move yet against Nvidia, which has dominated the market for the large, integrated hardware racks that power the biggest AI training and inference workloads. Landing Microsoft, one of the largest buyers of AI infrastructure in the world, as a customer is a meaningful validation for AMD's rack scale ambitions, since cloud providers choosing to deploy a challenger's hardware at scale, rather than only buying individual chips, signals a level of confidence in the full system's reliability and performance that AMD has struggled to demonstrate in the past. AMD shares rose more than 3 percent on the announcement, with investors reading the Microsoft deal as evidence that Nvidia may finally be facing credible competition for large scale AI infrastructure contracts rather than only at the level of individual chip sales.
