Bezos backs CuspAI as the startup teams up with Nvidia to hunt for new chipmaking materials

2:58 AM · July 20, 2026

Jeff Bezos's investment vehicle has backed British startup CuspAI in a 450 million dollar funding round valuing the company at 2.6 billion dollars, according to CNBC, alongside the launch of a new industry coalition called the AI Materials Foundry. The coalition brings together more than 40 technology giants, industrial firms, and research institutions, including Nvidia, Meta, and Hyundai Motor Group, pooling computing power and scientific resources to build software that can help researchers discover new materials more quickly and at lower cost than traditional laboratory based methods allow. Chipmaking is one of the coalition's central use cases, since the physical materials used in semiconductor manufacturing, from substrates to specialized coatings, are a less visible but still significant bottleneck in scaling chip production alongside the more widely discussed chip design and fabrication capacity constraints. CuspAI's approach uses AI models to predict which candidate materials are likely to have the properties researchers are looking for before those materials are ever physically synthesized and tested, a pattern similar to how AI assisted drug discovery has increasingly worked in pharmaceuticals, applied here instead to industrial and electronics materials. The involvement of both Nvidia and Meta as coalition members, rather than only as customers of CuspAI's technology, signals that major AI infrastructure buyers see enough strategic value in accelerating materials discovery for their own hardware supply chains to actively participate in building the underlying tools themselves.
