Bristol Myers Squibb is building the life science industry's most advanced AI factory on Nvidia's Vera Rubin

Bristol Myers Squibb is deploying eight Nvidia DGX Vera Rubin NVL72 systems, becoming the first life sciences company to buy an Nvidia DGX SuperPOD built on the Vera Rubin architecture, according to Nvidia's own blog. The rack scale systems, each combining Nvidia's Vera CPUs and Rubin GPUs, deliver up to ten times the performance per megawatt of the infrastructure they replace and roughly fifteen times the overall capacity of Bristol Myers Squibb's previous setup, according to the companies. The expanded deployment is meant to open access to advanced AI drug discovery tools to effectively every scientist at the company rather than a small specialized team, letting researchers use AI predictions to prioritize which molecules to actually synthesize and test in the lab, filtering out candidates unlikely to meet the properties a given drug program is targeting before committing scarce laboratory time and resources to them. The companies frame the deployment around a model of hybrid intelligence, in which AI systems function as co-scientists working alongside human researchers rather than simply automating existing workflows. The new Vera Rubin based system is expected to be fully deployed by January 2027, positioning Bristol Myers Squibb as an early, large scale test case for how much of a practical difference Nvidia's newest data center architecture makes in an industry where the actual bottleneck has historically been laboratory time rather than raw compute.
