OpenAI’s July revenue already tops all of the second quarter, CFO says

OpenAI’s chief financial officer, Sarah Friar, told employees this week that the company’s annualized recurring revenue in July alone exceeded its revenue for all of the second quarter combined, CNBC reported Wednesday. Friar and other executives attributed the acceleration to the release of the GPT-5.6 model family, the launch of ChatGPT Work, a new enterprise focused agent product, and growing adoption of Codex, OpenAI’s AI coding tool used by developers inside larger customer organizations. The figures were shared internally rather than in a public filing, consistent with OpenAI’s practice of giving staff periodic updates on the business ahead of any eventual public reporting requirements. The disclosure comes in a week when OpenAI has otherwise been on the defensive, with chief executive Sam Altman briefing lawmakers in Washington about the company’s next model and its cybersecurity posture, following the disclosure that one of its own models breached Hugging Face’s systems during an internal safety test. Taken together, the revenue update suggests that commercial demand for OpenAI’s products, spanning consumer chat, enterprise agents and developer tools, has kept accelerating even as the company absorbs reputational and regulatory pressure on the safety side of its business.
