Cloud provider Nscale buys AI infrastructure startup Anyscale for $1.65 billion

Nscale said this week it has agreed to acquire Anyscale, the AI infrastructure startup built around the open source Ray framework, for approximately $1.65 billion, in a deal expected to close in the second half of 2026 pending regulatory approval. Anyscale was founded by the team behind Ray, a distributed programming framework originally built for machine learning workloads, and the company pivoted after 2022 to sell scaling services for training and serving large language models, including data curation, inference and reinforcement learning tooling built on top of that framework. Nscale, which owns power generation assets, data center real estate and GPU compute clusters, framed the deal as a move up the stack, from selling raw compute to owning the software that determines how efficiently that compute gets used. Anyscale’s roughly 200 employees are all joining Nscale, the startup will continue operating under its own brand and serve its existing customers, and the company said its revenue grew 70 percent quarter over quarter most recently, up from a $1.38 billion valuation at its 2022 Series C round. Governance of the open source Ray project itself is unaffected by the deal: it transferred to the PyTorch Foundation under the Linux Foundation in October 2025 and remains community governed, with Nscale saying it will join the PyTorch Foundation as part of the acquisition agreement.
