AMD to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, lands multi-gigawatt chip deal

AMD announced on July 22, 2026 that it will invest as much as $5 billion in Anthropic, pairing the equity stake with a commitment from Anthropic to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs in AMD's Helios rack-scale systems. A single gigawatt of compute can power roughly 750,000 U.S. homes, giving a sense of the scale AMD and Anthropic are now planning around, with deployment expected to begin in the first half of 2027. Anthropic already runs some workloads on AMD's current-generation MI355X chips, and the companies said Claude itself is being used to help optimize workloads for Instinct GPUs and AMD's ROCm software stack, a deliberate effort to close the software gap that has long favored Nvidia. For AMD, landing Anthropic as a marquee customer and investor target is a direct shot at Nvidia's near-monopoly on frontier AI training and inference hardware, while for Anthropic the deal continues a pattern of diversifying its compute supply beyond any single chipmaker or cloud provider. The announcement came the same week Anthropic was finalizing a separate $1.5 billion legal settlement and closing in on a nearly $1 trillion valuation, underscoring how compute deals and capital raises are now arriving almost simultaneously for the leading AI labs.
