Nvidia detailed its next generation Vera CPU, an 88 core, Arm based processor the company says was specifically designed to address performance bottlenecks in AI agents, according to CNBC. Nvidia says Vera delivers up to 1.8 times higher performance on agentic AI workloads than traditional x86 chips, the architecture used by Intel and AMD processors, with its Olympus cores, Scalable Coherency Fabric, and LPDDR5X memory architecture built to sustain high single thread performance even when a chip's full capacity is under load, a scenario increasingly common as AI agents run many operations in parallel. Nvidia representatives said Vera chips were delivered to select clients, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceX, back in June, with OpenAI planning to deploy the chips in large quantities starting this quarter. The chip marks Nvidia's most direct challenge yet to Intel and AMD specifically in the CPU market, a segment where Nvidia has historically been an outsider competing against two companies with deep, longstanding relationships with cloud providers and hyperscalers. Some analysts say Nvidia has effectively created a new class of CPU purpose built for agentic AI workloads that neither Intel nor AMD yet has a direct answer to, extending a pattern in which Nvidia is no longer competing only on GPUs but increasingly on the full rack scale system, CPU included.
