AMD buys Taalas, a startup that etches AI models directly into chips

AMD announced a definitive agreement to acquire Taalas, a specialized AI inference silicon startup founded in 2023 by former AMD and Tenstorrent architects. Taalas’s core idea is to etch a model’s weights directly into a chip’s physical wiring, creating what it calls Model Specific Integrated Circuits, rather than storing weights in high bandwidth memory that a GPU has to repeatedly fetch from during inference. According to AMD, Taalas’s design flow customizes only about two of a chip’s roughly one hundred metal layers per model and can turn around a model specific chip at TSMC in about two months. AMD says the acquisition strengthens its long term AI roadmap as inference becomes one of the fastest growing and most specialized segments of the AI market, giving it a differentiated approach alongside its existing GPU lineup as it competes with NVIDIA for AI compute spending. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, and the acquisition, subject to regulatory approval, is expected to close in the fourth quarter. The purchase is the latest sign that chipmakers see specialized, model specific hardware as a meaningful complement to general purpose accelerators as AI inference workloads scale and electricity and hardware costs come under greater scrutiny.
