India's Emergent becomes the country's second AI unicorn in a month

Bengaluru based startup Emergent has become India's second AI unicorn in a month, according to CNBC, after raising 300 million dollars in a Series C funding round that values the company at 1.5 billion dollars just over a year after it launched. Emergent builds what is often called vibe coding software, tools that let users describe an application in natural language and have AI generate much of the underlying code, a category that has attracted heavy investor interest globally over the past year. The round follows AI startup Sarvam crossing a 1 billion dollar valuation only weeks earlier, and the back to back milestones have raised hopes that India, often seen as a laggard in the broader AI race, can carve out a real advantage by building application layers on top of foundation models developed elsewhere rather than trying to compete directly on frontier model development. The rapid pace of both raises also reflects how much global venture capital is currently chasing AI application startups outside the small group of countries that build frontier models themselves, with investors betting that a large domestic market and a deep pool of software engineering talent can translate into commercially successful AI products even without owning the underlying models.
