APEC nations, including the US and China, sign first ministerial pact backing secure open-source AI
Twenty-one APEC economies, including the United States and China, adopted the Chengdu Statement at a ministerial summit, the first agreement at that level to formally back open-source AI development paired with calls for strong security safeguards. China’s industry minister Li Lecheng called it the first APEC statement to secure cooperation on open source, a notably cooperative move given ongoing US-China disputes over chip export controls and model provenance.
