New York becomes the first US state to freeze new AI data centers
Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order pausing new hyperscale AI data center construction in New York for up to a year, the first statewide moratorium of its kind in the country. The order blocks discretionary environmental permits for facilities using 50 megawatts or more while the state studies the impact on utility bills, water use, and the power grid.
