Zuckerberg tells investors billions of people will have a personal AI agent within five years

Speaking to investors on Meta’s quarterly earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg made his most explicit long term bet yet on personal AI agents, telling analysts, “it’s extremely unlikely if you look out five years from now, for example, whatever period of time you want, that you don’t have billions of people with a personal agent that understands your goals and that is just working on your behalf 24/7 to achieve your goals in whatever the domain is that you care about.” He described people eventually using such agents to manage their finances, health, interpersonal relationships, and household logistics, and framed the bet in commercial terms as much as technical ones, saying Meta believes “there will continue to be a significantly higher margin on selling intelligence rather than selling compute directly,” a notable line given how much Meta itself is currently spending on the compute needed to train and run its models. As an early proof point, Zuckerberg cited Meta’s business agents on WhatsApp and Messenger, rolled out globally this quarter and already adopted by more than a million businesses, and suggested messaging platforms, WhatsApp in particular, will be a central distribution point as personal digital assistants become more capable. The comments came the same week Meta reported a revenue beat alongside a 91 percent drop in free cash flow driven by AI infrastructure spending, underscoring the gap investors are being asked to bridge between Zuckerberg’s five year vision and the company’s near term numbers.
