Meta signs EU code of practice on labeling AI generated content

Meta announced this week that it is signing the European Union’s code of practice on transparency of AI generated content, a voluntary framework tied to the bloc’s AI Act meant to help users identify synthetic media as image and video generators become harder to distinguish from real photos and footage. Meta said it has built a detection tool that lets people check whether an image was created using Meta AI, and that it will keep working with industry groups including the Partnership on AI and the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, known as C2PA, to develop labeling approaches that work across platforms rather than a patchwork of incompatible systems. The company argued for simplicity over proliferation, stating: “We must avoid a situation where online content is subject to a growing array of different labels and disclosures that end up overwhelming people, while at the same time adding additional regulatory complexity for providers.” Meta first introduced its own AI content labeling approach in February 2024, and this week’s commitment extends that work into the EU’s formal compliance framework. The signing comes the same week the EU’s Digital Omnibus on AI took effect, delaying the AI Act’s toughest high risk compliance rules even as its transparency requirements for AI generated content remain on track for August 2.
