OpenAI’s report, titled ‘Work at the Frontier: How AI Is Expanding What People Do at Work,’ analyzed more than 800,000 ChatGPT messages sent by U.S. business users to understand not just how much work AI is speeding up, but whose work it is touching. The headline finding is that 16.8 percent of all work-related messages, and 43.5 percent of messages tied to a specific occupation, concerned tasks that would traditionally belong to a different job. The report offers concrete examples: a small-business owner drafting marketing copy, reviewing a contract, and running basic financial analysis all in the same afternoon, a salesperson digging through a customer dataset that would once have gone to a dedicated analyst, or a marketer fixing website code without waiting on a developer. The effect was more pronounced at smaller companies, where about 19 percent of work requests crossed occupational lines compared with roughly 16 percent at larger firms, consistent with workers at small businesses leaning on AI to cover for specialists they cannot otherwise afford. OpenAI frames this as the first large-scale empirical evidence that the occupational specialization that has organized modern work since the industrial era may be starting to run in reverse, with implications for hiring and job design that could show up well before they appear in official labor statistics.
