Amazon cuts some jobs in its artificial general intelligence unit

Amazon confirmed it is laying off some employees within its artificial general intelligence unit, according to CNBC, though the company declined to disclose how many staffers were affected. The unit, which has released Amazon's Nova family of AI models and also includes teams working on custom silicon and quantum computing, saw the eliminated roles concentrated specifically in model customization and post-training rather than across the group's work more broadly. An Amazon spokesperson framed the cuts as a matter of focus rather than retreat, saying the space is moving fast and the company is sharpening its focus on the initiatives that matter most for customers so it can move faster on what counts. The layoffs land at an unusual moment given Amazon's overall AI ambitions: the company has forecast roughly 200 billion dollars in capital expenditures for the year, up more than 50 percent from 2025, and is currently raising tens of billions of dollars in debt specifically to fund that AI infrastructure buildout.
