Anthropic in early talks to lease up to 10 billion dollars in compute from Meta

Anthropic has proposed leasing computing capacity from Meta in a deal that could be worth up to 10 billion dollars over two years, according to CNBC, which confirmed that very preliminary talks are underway, with the New York Times separately citing three people familiar with the discussions. Anthropic first pitched the arrangement in June, and Meta is still evaluating it. If the two sides reach an agreement, Anthropic would make monthly payments across the two year term, with either party able to walk away before it concludes. For Meta, a deal would represent a first step into the cloud computing business that chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has said the company is considering as a way to show investors its roughly 145 billion dollars in planned 2026 capital spending can generate revenue beyond its own products. The prospective arrangement would be smaller than the 45 billion dollar, three year compute deal Anthropic struck with Elon Musk's SpaceX in May to use capacity at the Colossus 1 data center. Persistent shortages of Nvidia chips continue to constrain AI developers, forcing Anthropic to cap how much users can interact with its top tier models, and the Meta talks are the latest sign the company is pursuing compute wherever it can find it.
